Ms. Wyss will be reading from her newest work: a biography about her brother told through memories, anecdotes, and interviews. Mr. Wyss has amassed a considerable fortune over the course of his life, despite the fact that making money was never a goal for him. He is known for his generosity, spending large sums supporting ecological, social, and cultural projects. He typically shies away from the lime light, but with this book we get a look into the inner life of this great man, as told through the words of his sister. In collaboration with the Wyss’s, Vesna Kondric Horvat, and swissnex Boston.

Hansjörg Wyss - My Brother

He is funny, overbearing, and extremely generous. And he is immensely rich, in spite of the fact that it was never his main goal to make a lot of money. He is a public figure now, although for a long time he tried hard to stay out of the limelight. Who is he, then? He feels the need to give some of his money back to society — a lot of money, in fact, because he spends large sums supporting a great number of ecological, social, and cultural projects. Hedi Wyss, his sister, tried to get closer to her brother through writing about him, but not by writing a formal biography nor by systematically exploring the reasons for his success in business. What this book consists of, in the end, is a wide range of memories, anecdotes, and interviews. In their totality they amount to an intricate portrait of a complex human being and exceptional businessman who over the years turned a small firm into one of the world’s leading medtech companies.

Hedi Wyss is the author of numerous novels and books for young readers. She has received a number of prizes and awards, among them the Swiss award for books for adolescents in 1981 and the Zurich journalists’ award in 1990.

An engineer and entrepreneur, Hansjorg Wyss, MBA 1965, is also highly regarded for his philanthropy. After attending Harvard Business School, Mr. Wyss launched medical research and design company, Synthes USA, and was met with great success. This enabled his funding of initiatives in land conservation, medicine, economic opportunity, conflict resolution as well as education and the arts. Among the many benefactors, this includes gifts to create the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, the Wyss Doctoral Endowment program at Harvard Business School and most recently, the new Wyss Translational Center Zürich.
