Join us for the world’s first immersive storytelling festival. Open to the public, FoST FEST will feature more than 50 virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality experiences, demos of the latest cutting-edge technologies, from eye-tracking software and haptics to AI and facial recognition; a multi-person VR theater featuring a curated selection of the very best in virtual reality entertainment; panel conversations with some of the biggest names in entertainment, marketing, and technology; live performances, interactive games, and much more! Three of these experiences will feature works from Swiss studios.
The FoST Playground
The festival will take place at locations throughout the city, but the center of operations will be the FoST playground, just off the northeast corner of Central Park. All three Swiss projects will appear at this venue. A ticket purchases you a three-hour session at the playground, where you’ll have full access to all projects and exhibits at that venue.
Swiss Presence @ FoST
Three exhibits at this year’s FoST FEST are Swiss – read more about each project, and the studio behind it:
Break a Leg, by Ape Lab
Break a Leg is an interactive experience designed for virtual reality. Inspired by magicians of the 19th century (think Houdini and Kellar) it will immerse you in an offbeat universe as you play the role of an illusionist on stage, and are asked to deliver your best performance in front of a demanding and unpredictable audience. Break a Leg at FoST FEST is supported in part by swissnex Boston.
Ape Lab crafts the future of Virtual Reality, creating games and interactive stories using Spatial Stories, a toolkit of their own creation, tailored-made for interactive content creation.
Late Shift, by CtrlMovie
Cinematic storytelling takes a new twist with ‘Late Shift,’ the world’s first truly interactive movie experience. Developed by CtrlMovie, and using technology of the same name, ‘Late Shift’ is a brand new, world-first experience that borrows from both film and game worlds, and allows the viewer to choose the fate of the on-screen protagonist, using an app. Late Shift at FoST FEST is supported in part by swissnex Boston.
CtrlMovie is a Swiss start-up, established in 2014. It owns a unique and patent-pending IP, with which it creates seamless interactive, cinematic-quality films for mobile devices, interactive cinema screenings and home entertainment. CtrlMovie creates interactive movies on its own and also offers its technology and services to third party producers in the entertainment, advertising and education industries.
Birdly, by SOMNIACS
Birdly is all about fulfilling one of the longest-held dreams of humankind: to fly like a bird. It is an immersive, full-body installation and research project that explores the experience of being a bird in flight. Unlike a typical flight simulator, where you’re controlling a machine, Birdly lets you intuitively embody the feeling of being a bird. It combines extended forms of storytelling with strong visuals and technical precision to create a unique and truly intuitive experience. Birdly at FoST FEST is supported in part by Pro Helvetia.
SOMNIACS is dedicated to developing and delivering world class full-body VR experiences based on Swiss design and technical perfection.
Future of StoryTelling Festival – Panel
Additionally as part of the festival, Emilie Joly from Apelab will take part in a panel discussion titled “Marketing and Distribution for New Storytelling Mediums.” The panel will take place at the FoST Playground Exhibits on October 8, 2016. Get your ticket for the panel here.
More About FoST
The Future of StoryTelling (FoST) is a passionate community of people from the worlds of media, technology, and communications who are exploring how storytelling is evolving in the digital age. At the heart of FoST are two signature events. The two-day, invitation-only FoST Summit gathers top thinkers and practitioners from diverse fields to share ideas and experiences shaping the storytelling landscape. FoST FEST, open to the public, features VR and AR experiences, tech demos, a multiperson VR theater, panel conversations, live performances, interactive games, and much more. In addition to the Summit and FEST, FoST also produces a wide range of content and programming, such as curated exhibitions; an annual series of short films; regular influencer salons, tech tastings, and storytelling workshops; and a popular blog and other social media content aimed at FoST’s network of over half a million enthusiastic followers.
